Bjørn Magne Nyhagen skrev dette stykket i 2019, til aspirantkorpset til Valdres Junior Brass Band, som jeg dirigerte på den tiden. Stykket er, som tittelen tilsier, en enkel calypso, med de karakteristiske synkoperingene som kjennetegner en calypso. Den opprinnelige versjonen besto av det som her er Intro, A-, B- og F-delen, men uten modulasjon. Stykket er altså noe forlenget, bl.a. med en åpen trommedel, hvor trommegruppa kan få slippe seg løs litt, enten ved å spille det jeg har foreslått i notene, eller fri improvisasjon. Jeg har laget til sammen fire Percussion-stemmer, pluss at Part 1 C også kan spilles på melodisk slagverk. Så her kan man aktivisere opp til fem slagverkere hvis man har behov for det.
Bjørn Magne Nyhagen wrote this piece in 2019 for the beginner band of the Valdres Junior Brass Band, which I was conducting at then. As the title suggests, the piece is a simple calypso, featuring the characteristic syncopations typical of the style. The original version consisted of what here is the Intro, and the A, B, and F sections, but without the modulation. The piece has therefore been somewhat extended, including an open drum section where the percussion group can let loose a bit—either by playing what I have suggested in the score or through free improvisation. I have written a total of four percussion parts, and Part 1C can also be played on a melodic percussion instrument. So, if needed, up to five percussionists can be involved.
